Blindsided!

Name: Blindside
Number: 20/20
League: Houston Roller Derby
Home Team: Bayou City Bosses
Seasons Played: 3

How did you decide on your derby name?
I teach individuals with visual impairments so the name just seemed to fit.

What is your (roller derby) position of choice?
I like blocker one or two.

What is your skate gear of choice?
I don’t really have a skate preference but since I fall a lot, I really like my custom pads “Pro Designed” made by Wild Bill.

How did you hear about roller derby?
I was recruited by skaters that were at a club passing out flyers.

Were you a fan of the game before you played?
No, I didn’t know much about the sport.

What made you decide to become a roller girl?
My boyfriend encouraged me to join.  He used to watch roller derby as a kid in the 70’s.  He thought I would like it.  Which I do!

Did you have a specific team you wanted to play for or did you end up
exactly where you wanted to be?
I didn’t have specific team but I feel I ended up exactly where I should be.  I love my Bayou City Bosses!!!

What are some of your best/favorite moments in roller derby?
My favorite moment would have to be when we beat the Sirens for the very first time to win the championship.  It was my first year with HRD and the fans were going crazy.  It was an incredible moment.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to/ around you in derby?
From pants accidentally being pulled down taking a whip off of someone, to classic hits, to girls falling for absolutely no reason, there are way too many funny moments to pick just one!

Who are your roller derby heroes?
Definitely DBC, she really inspired me to want to improve as a skater.  She always told me that I played with a lot of “heart.”  (Not necessarily a lot of skill.)

Do you have a motivational quote?
“It’s only 2 minutes of your life” - Chicken

Do you have any game day rituals?
I don’t really have any rituals.

What goes through your brain as you lace up your skates for a bout?
Please God, don’t let me do anything stupid.  My family and friends are out there watching.

Do you have a theme song?
Not really.

Do you have a signature move?
Mostly elbowing.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in roller derby?
Don’t expect it to come overnight.  And don’t let it consume your life.

I know derby takes over your life when you become a roller girl. How do
you keep things in balance?

It’s difficult to keep it in balance 100% of the time but every once in a while you want to evaluate how “things are” in life and make adjustments.

What was your family's reaction to your desire to play?
I come from a very conservative family so they were really surprised to hear about.  They love the fact that I play roller derby.

How does it feel to have fans?
I have fans????

You are a roller girl you have fans Blindside, starting with me!

Anyone you'd like to take the opportunity to thank?
All my fellow skaters that helped me become a better skater and a better person, but mostly my boyfriend for supporting and putting up with me.

What are some of your greatest roller derby accomplishments?
Winning “most improved rookie” my first year.  It was a big deal because I really put the time and effort in to become a better skater.

Do you have answers to questions I should have asked?
Nope, I think you’ve just about covered it.  Elvis has left the building.
